2025.05.17

To celebrate World Family Doctor Day, the Health Bureau and the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians co-hosted the "World Family Doctor Day Seminar 2025" on May 17. The seminar, themed "Fostering Psychological Resilience in a Changing World," aimed to recognize the contributions of family doctors in promoting mental health and resilience amidst societal changes and challenges.

The seminar was opened by Dr. Chau Wai-keung, President of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, with welcome remarks from Dr. Libby Lee, Deputy Secretary for Health, and Professor Margaret Chan, former Director-General of the World Health Organization. Dr. Lee highlighted that family doctors, through building continuous and deep relationships with patients, can early detect mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress, providing timely treatment to enhance patients' psychological resilience and overall well-being.

The seminar featured discussions by Professor Joseph Lee, President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Professor Lee Kwok-tung, Chairman of the Elderly Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Professor Zhu Pei-zhu, President of the General Practice Branch of the Cross-Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association. They shared insights on topics including sports and exercise medicine development, the role of family doctors in elderly healthcare, and Shanghai’s experiences in enhancing community health services. Dr. Pang Fei-chau, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, also shared updates on the expansion of the Chronic Disease Co-Care Pilot Scheme, providing attendees with insights into the latest service developments.

The seminar also took the opportunity to present the "Outstanding Family Doctor Participation Award" to family doctors actively involved in the Chronic Disease Co-Care Pilot Scheme, recognizing and thanking them for their contributions.

The event concluded with a summary by Dr. Chau Wai-keung, President of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians. Family doctors, with a patient-centered approach, play a critical role in caring for patients across different life stages, serving as a vital cornerstone in building primary healthcare services.
